Dinosaur Egg Composition

Surprisingly, the majority of dinosaur egg shells are not fossilized but are instead the original casing. In some cases, a fossilized baby dinosaur can be found inside the egg. Other times, there are just assorted bones that are virtually undecipherable. In excellent specimens, the calcite in the outer shell is unaltered which allows scientists to examine details like amino acids with an electron microscope. Through close examination of dinosaur eggs, scientists have discovered many similarities between the eggs of these ancient reptiles and the eggs of modern birds.
