Features of the Saber Tooth Cat

Saber tooth cats are known for their enormous upper canine teeth. It is not clear how exactly these teeth were used in hunting activities. It’s possible that the huge saber teeth were used to grab and restrain larger prey but this theory is not strong due to the fact that saber teeth can be broken quite easily and most skulls are found with intact teeth. Another, stronger possibility is that the teeth were used to stab the prey in the abdomen or slash at the throat in order for the prey to bleed to death. Because many believe that the saber tooth cat was a social animal, the use of the large teeth would support this idea and indicate that larger teeth were more attractive to other saber tooth cats.
