Saber Tooth Cats

Saber Tooth Cat Facts- Saber tooth cats are named after their huge upper teeth or fangs and were one of the most successful predators during the Cenozoic. These animals declined in numbers during the Pliocene Epoch and were completely wiped out during the Pleistocene- about 10,000 years ago. It is possible that more isolated populations of these cats may have survived and have been existing in very remote areas. There are some reports of an animal known as the Mountain Tiger living in the northern mountains of Chad. People in this area describe an animal with huge fangs, no tail, red fur and white strips. The African saber tooth tiger probably went extinct a million years ago, but some hunters in the inhospitable area are able to identify it when shown pictures. Other mysteries surround this amazing creature, and questions as to how its fangs were used in hunting are still unanswered by scientists

Hunting habits of the Saber Tooth Cat -Saber tooth cats are thought to have hunted in packs. Evidence of this theory is supported by the large number of saber tooth skeletons found in the Rancho La Brea for each potential prey skeleton. For each large herbivore, 5-10 saber tooth skeletons were found. It is possible that more saber-tooths were present at the time of the hunt, but were able to extract themselves from the tar pit. This evidence strongly suggests the pack-like nature of the saber tooth cat.
